Divisi Animal Model 

Model hewan coba merupakan salah satu alat pendukung dalam mempelajari penyakit pada manusia, mempelajari mekanisme obat maupun mengembangkan obat baru. Model hewan coba yang yang valid dan prediktif akan mampu menjawab pertanyaan klinis yang ada.

Secara garis besar, pengembangan model hewan untuk mempelajari suatu penyakit dilakukan menggunakan 3 cara yaitu :

  1. Induksi farmakologi
  2. Induksi operasi
  3. Modifikasi genetik

Masing-masing cara tersebut memiliki kelebihan dan kekurangan masing-masing.

Sampai saat ini model yang paling banyak digunakan di FKKMK UGM adalah model hewan yang dibuat melalui induksi farmakologi dan operasi. Model hewan untuk mempelajari kanker kolon, kanker payudara, diabetes, hipertensi dan gagal ginjal merupakan beberapa dari model hewan yang diinduksi secara farmakologi.

Sedangkan beberapa contoh model hewan yang diinduksi secara operasi yang sudah dikembangkan sampai saat ini di FKKMK UGM adalah model hewan gagal ginjal akut maupun kronik, hipertensi, iskemik global dan anastomosis usus. Sayangnya model hewan dari hasil modifikasi genetik belum digunakan di FKKMK karena fasilitas ruang hewan coba yang belum memungkinkan untuk memfasilitasi genetic modified animal.

Namun penelitian dan usaha untuk mengembangkan genetic modified animal sudah mulai dilakukan dengan cara melakukan penelitian in vitro untuk membuat sel knock out maupun transgenic oleh civitas akademika di FKKMK.
